Releasing Expectation
Looking forward to a vacation can be one of the most uplifting aspects of everyday life. You might imagine all the fun things you’ll do, all the new things you’ll see, and maybe you’ll connect with people in an unexpected way. You envision perfect weather, a perfect balance of down time and activities, and maybe even perfect timing. So how do you react when it rains the whole time? Or what if you don’t get tickets to the attraction on the top of your must-see list? Expectation can be a double-edged sword when thing don’t turn out the way you imagined.
Expectation VS allowing
In my early twenties, my friends and I would frequently head out to the local bars for a night out and a lot of the times it looked as expected. We started at our favorite bodega, then hopped over to another favorite hangout, then another… okay, I was living in a place where there were so. many. bars. A lot of the time, it felt like we were chasing a good time. We would hop from bar to bar looking for it, and somehow it was just out of reach.
But on occasion, something magical happened. Something unexpected would pop up and take us on a completely different path. As the night unfolded, we found that we magically lined up with the most fun. We met new and interesting people, tried out new places, danced like nobody was watching, and floated home on a cloud of bliss. We used to refer to those nights as being “fish in the sea” because we allowed the tide to guide us without expectation.
Shift Your Focus
On the flip side, I experienced times so loaded with expectation that we would have the most fun, whether we liked it or not, that they turned out terrible. It only takes a few of those experiences to wake you up to the misery you are causing for yourself. I could see the stark contrast between holding onto an expectation and allowing the magic to flow to you effortlessly. I’m grateful I was presented with this leason early in my life to help me shift my focus.
However, releasing your death grip on expectation doesn’t mean you don’t want and wish for things. I spend a lot of time day dreaming about the best possible scenario for an idea I’m dreaming up. But I also let myself get excited to find out how it’s going to unfold. I think it’s this curiosity that feeds the flames of the desire. If I imagine the best possible scenario and set the intention for “this or something better,” the fun shifts from the expectation of what you imagined to knowing the universe is going to surprise and delight you on your path to that goal.
Wisdom from the Stars
In my Wisdom from the Stars channeled messages, I frequently sit back after the message has come through and read it again. Sometimes it feels straightforward and some times I get a glimpse of something on the horizon. I may make a connection in my mind of what I think the message refers to, but ultimately, my mind goes to “I can’t wait to find out how that comes to fruition.”
In the same way, when I get intuitive guidance in my everyday life, I follow it without question. You never know where it’s going to lead and there are times when you won’t even know what your guidance helped you avoid or allow, so there is no logic in assigning expectation. I follow the guidance knowing that magic is sure to follow when I allow the tides of intuition to carry me like a fish in the sea.
What Do You Want To Create?
In the meantime, you’ve shifted away from a set expectation to the playful wonder of creation. This also works when faced with a harsh or freightening reality in the external world. You can fixate on the outcome you expect to happen or you can shift your focus to what you want to create. The contrast is there not to bog you down, but to show you what it is you do want instead. You can use your time and energy to worry about how everything is going to play out or you can use your imagination to envision the world you want to create…or something even better. Which feels more expansive to you?
